Grant Freeze Obituary & Accident, Nicolet HS Student & Ozaukee Aquatics Swimmer Died, Wisconsin

The Nicolet High School community is mourning the sudden loss of 16-year-old Grant Freeze, who died on October 1, 2025, following a car accident in Ozaukee County.

According to the Mequon Police Department, the crash occurred Wednesday afternoon on West Pioneer Road near North Klug Lane. Investigators said an SUV driven by Freeze crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming dump truck. Emergency crews extricated Freeze from the vehicle, and he was flown by Flight for Life to Froedtert Hospital with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of medical teams, he did not survive. The dump truck driver, a 57-year-old man, was also taken to Froedtert Hospital with severe injuries.

Grant Freeze was more than just a student—he was a rising star in competitive swimming. Representing both Nicolet High School and Ozaukee Aquatics, Freeze earned recognition at state and national levels. He was a two-time finalist at the 2025 USA Swimming Futures Championship in Madison, placing fourth in both the 1500m and 800m freestyle. Earlier this year, he became a two-time champion at the Wisconsin LSC SC Senior Championship, winning the 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle events.

His talent, dedication, and sportsmanship made him one of Wisconsin’s brightest young swimmers. Teammates and coaches describe him as a hardworking athlete with a kind spirit, someone who inspired others in and out of the pool.

Nicolet High School sent a notice to families confirming the heartbreaking news, with counselors made available to support grieving students and staff.

West Pioneer Road was closed for nearly four hours as crash reconstruction teams investigated the accident. The case remains under review by local authorities.

Grant Freeze’s passing leaves a deep void in the community, especially among his family, friends, and the swimming world where he had already achieved so much at such a young age.
